Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the course?
Normally you will have a one hour session each week for approximately ten weeks but, as everyone learns at a different pace it could be longer or even shorter.

Do I use my own car?
Yes, all sessions will be in your car although during part of one session your Observer will give you a demonstration drive in his/her car.

What's an Observer?
When you take the course you're an Associate and the person guiding you towards your Advanced Driving Test is an Observer. Observers have passed the Advanced Driving test and taken addition training to enable them to advise you correctly.

Do I need any qualifications to take the course?
All you need is to have held a full driving licence for at least three months and a roadworthy car that is insured and has an M.O.T. certificate if appropriate.

What about penalty points?
There is no upper limit of points to prevent you from joining and getting the value of observed runs to help you avoid getting any more. You will be able to take your Advanced Test. However, there is a restriction currently applied which prevents anyone who has a court case for a driving matter pending ( including the issue of a Fixed Penalty Notice) taking the test until the court case is completed. This restriction will continue to apply, to avoid the IAM being used as a ploy by some who are simply seeking to manipulate their position, and who may be expelled from the IAM by being disqualified from driving almost immediately after their test.

When do I know that I'm ready to take the test?
You and your Observer will decide when you are driving sufficiently well to move to the next phase which will be a test drive with your Observer's Co-ordinator. If your driving is of a good enough standard you will move on to a second test drive with the Chief Training Officer or her deputy who will decide whether you are ready for your test. On both test runs it may be decided that you might benefit from further assistance from your Observer.
All these checks and tests are designed to ensure that when you take your Advanced Driving Test you are properly prepared and should pass.

What does the test involve?
On the test drive which usually covers about 35 to 40 miles and last about 90 minutes you will be accompanied by a qualified examiner who has passed the Police Advanced Driving Test. You will be expected to demonstrate the skills you have learned during the course on both urban and rural roads.

How much does it cost?
We offer the IAM's "Skill For Life" package which includes :-

The package costs £139.00 - a small price to pay for a lifetime of safe driving.
