Courses and Test

Courses

The Scarborough Group runs courses for both cars and motorcycles which build up gradually to taking the Advanced Driving Test. For information about motorcycle courses visit the group’s motorcycle website.

Institute of Advanced Motorists Logo

The courses take approximately ten weeks but can be extended if necessary. When you join the group you will be known as an Associate and will be allocated an Observer. An Observer is a group member who has first passed the Advanced Driving Test and has subsequently taken the group’s Observer’s course and finally passed the Observer’s test.

The course consists of a number of observed runs in your vehicle with the Observer offering advice in regard to improving the your driving until the Observer feel that the you are ready to take the Advanced Driving Test. Once this driving level is attained you will take two "dummy" tests with the Chief Training Officer, or her deputy, who will decide whether you are ready for the Advanced Driving Test proper. On occasions it is deemed necessary for two or three more observed runs to be beneficial. All these checks and tests are designed to ensure that when you take your Advanced Driving Test you are properly prepared and should pass.

In addition to the observed runs there are two classroom sessions held at Allatt House which include, among other things, driving related videos, advice on driving techniques and question and answer sessions.

On the test drive which usually covers about 35 to 40 miles and last about 90 minutes you will be accompanied by a qualified examiner who has passed the Police Advanced Driving Test. You will be expected to demonstrate the skills you have learned during the course on both urban and rural roads.
